Communicating Through Crisis: Ethics and Practice in Genocide Documentation

This research project examines the profound ethical challenges faced by communicators documenting and sharing real-time atrocities, specifically focusing on the ongoing genocide in Palestine. As violence unfolds on our screens daily, we investigate critical questions: What does it mean to witness and be required to broadcast genocide as it happens? How do communicators navigate the precarity of translating grief, trauma, and human rights violations into content that reaches global audiences?

Our study centers on Palestinian communicators on the frontlines of this crisis and the audiences engaging with their content. Through their experiences, we explore what communication strategies have proven effective, which have fallen short, and how we can better support ethical, impactful storytelling in future humanitarian crises.

This project addresses the urgent need to understand the psychology of visibility, the risk of desensitization through repeated exposure to violence, and the communicator's burden of transforming unspeakable tragedy into actionable awareness all while honoring the humanity of those suffering.
